Sports Betting Advice: Be careful whose advice you take!

As with any venture that involves your hard-earned cash, it’s prudent to be careful about whose advice you listen to and, moreover, whose you might consider taking. This is especially true when it comes to the gambling environment, and more so with sports betting than in any other arena.

The proliferation of so-called experts when it comes to sports betting is similar to that old saying about opinions being like a certain part of the human anatomy … everybody’s got one. The problem is, more people than you care to hear from will offer their opinion at every turn, and after a while the information overload can be enough to make you feel as though your head will explode.

There’s a method for dealing with this that is similar to narrowing down which games you intend to wager on. That is, immediately ignore 95% of everything that is out there.  Most of the people spewing free advice know not of what they say; think about it. You don’t see Bill Gates walking around computer stores telling everyone the secrets to his empire. Those who truly know their stuff in the sports betting business aren’t eager to give away their secrets to strangers, much less to dispense this information for free. What’s more, most true experts are busy making money with their knowledge and skill and don’t spend a whole lot of time trying to educate the uninformed.

The person whose advice you should listen to most is yourself. It’s your money, after all, and you might as well make the best decision possible based on the vast arsenal of resources and information that are at your disposal.  This doesn’t mean you should never consider the advice of others, but you should do so with a careful eye and make sure you do not take lightly the decision to consider someone else’s advice.

Whether you should ever pay for a pick might be another argument, but for this example we’re going to assume that you will never use a sports handicapping service and instead will make all of your decisions on your own.

Who can you turn to for help? Your best bet is to find people who are close to the business, develop a rapport and establish trust. Finding someone with whom you can trade ideas is never a bad thought; you might not always agree, but sometimes it’s helpful to get another perspective. Just make sure there is a mutual respect between you and the person with whom you share information.

If you bet sports long enough, you are destined to encounter at least a few people who truly know their stuff and from whose insights you can benefit. Those who work in sports books or used to be in the sportsbook industry are often trustworthy sources of information.

Also, be sure to use all of the resources available.

Sports betting is so widespread these days, that all you need is a computer to find every ounce of information on every team that is out there. Websites such as TodaysPicks.net will provide more information about betting trends, teams’ records against the spread, injuries and so forth than you ever imagined was available.

It certainly doesn’t hurt to listen to a well-known handicapper if he is on a radio show or read his articles if he publishes a web site that contains sports betting advice. Still, proceed with caution.

Even if a handicapper has a proven record of accuracy, it doesn’t carry a whole lot of weight unless he is an accomplished bettor, and the differences warrant a distinction. In other words, it’s much easier to pick games with none of your own money on the line, than to consistently win while backing your opinions with cash.

What’s more, most truly successful handicappers usually have a trick or two up their sleeves. That is, they may give a free pick or two per day, and might even show a winning record with these picks. But these guys often make their living off selling picks, and will only dispense a certain amount of information for free. Again, your decision on whether to buy a pick should be made with serious scrutiny.

Otherwise, your best course of action is to do your own homework and wager on games in which you feel you have an advantage.  Limit the amount of potential outside influences by simply and politely declining the advice of endless arm-chair experts you are destined to encounter, and find a small but trustworthy network of contacts you can trust to share ideas with.  Do these things, and you will find yourself ahead of the game.
